Noam Shazeer, a co-author of the Transformer paper who led development of Google's Gemini, revealed on June 18, 2026 that he is leaving Google to join OpenAI. His new role is reported to be leading AI architecture research, and his departure is said to stem from a reallocation of computing resources away from his project.
