Gartner Defines New 'Guardian Agents' Category for Governing AI Agents

A new category called "Guardian agents"—designed to give runtime visibility and control over the autonomous behavior of AI agents that traditional IAM (Identity and Access Management) cannot capture—is taking shape, driven by Gartner's market definition and a wave of vendor productization. Gartner published its first Market Guide for Guardian Agents in early 2026, framing guardian agents as "a blend of AI governance and runtime control within the AI TRiSM framework." Around the same time, Orchid Security released an enterprise guide, "Guardian Agents: The Enterprise Guide to AI Identity Governance," promoting the concept of identity governance for agents.
