On June 12, 2026, Anthropic suspended worldwide access to its newly released AI models Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 for all users, acting on a US Commerce Department export control directive issued just days after launch. The directive barred foreign nationals—including Anthropic employees based in the United States—from accessing the two models, and because the company could not restrict access to the targeted group alone, it disabled them entirely. Other Claude models, such as Opus 4.8, were unaffected and remain available.
