Meta licensed face recognition software from US-based Rank One Computing (ROC) for the internal development of its Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta smart glasses app, according to reporting by WIRED. Based on a licensing document obtained by WIRED and analysis of the app, Rank One's technology left traces of integration into a test build of the "Meta AI" companion app required for the glasses. The license supported processing up to 10 million facial templates and liveness detection, which determines whether a camera sees a real person rather than a photo or mask.
