On June 12, 2026, the US Commerce Department issued an export control directive ordering Anthropic to bar access to its latest AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, for all foreign nationals inside and outside the US, prompting the company to disable both models for every user worldwide the same day. Commerce cited national security concerns that a jailbreak circumventing the models' safety guardrails could be exploited for cyber capabilities, banning use by any foreign national including Anthropic's own foreign employees.
