The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), part of the Department of Transportation, on June 25, 2026 unveiled a proposed rule that would eliminate the requirement for a manual brake pedal on vehicles designed to be driven solely by an Automated Driving System (ADS). The move would ease mass production and deployment of purpose-built robotaxis without steering wheels or pedals, such as Tesla's Cybercab and Amazon-owned Zoox's vehicles.
