Billions of real-world scans that Pokémon Go players helped collect were used to train an AI model that could support location estimation for military drones, several UK and US outlets reported in June 2026. Behind the story is a plan by the spinout Niantic Spatial to deploy its geospatial model for drone and robot navigation through a partnership with the US defense and intelligence firm Vantor (formerly Maxar Intelligence).

Company's position

Raw scan images were not shared with Vantor and sharing them is not part of the agreement. Scans were strictly opt-in under the terms in effect; the AR feature has ended and data sharing stopped.

The concern

Players say they never consented to military use. Ethics experts call it reuse beyond the original scope of consent — and the indirect influence of already-trained models has not been clearly ruled out.

A gap remains between reporting and official statements over whether raw data was shared — reviving the question of where to draw the line on reuse and consent for data gathered through consumer apps.
