On June 24, 2026, OpenAI unveiled Jalapeño, its first custom-designed AI chip, developed jointly with semiconductor giant Broadcom. Built as an ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) optimized for large language model (LLM) inference, it is intended to power ChatGPT, Codex, the OpenAI API, and future agentic products. OpenAI describes it as an "Intelligence Processor." According to the unveiling, OpenAI handled the core architecture and design, while Broadcom contributed to development, production, and integration—particularly networking.
