Alphabet's Waymo filed a voluntary software recall with NHTSA (the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) on June 18, 2026, covering about 3,871 robotaxis over a defect that let vehicles enter closed freeway construction zones at highway speeds. The recall applies to Jaguar I-PACE vehicles running the fifth-generation Automated Driving System (Gen 5 ADS); newer Gen 6 vehicles are not affected. At least 13 incidents were confirmed, including six in Phoenix in April and seven in the San Francisco Bay Area in May, in which vehicles failed to recognize ramp-closure signs and cones and kept driving at highway speeds. Waymo filed the recall for the affected vehicles.
