US-based Span is deploying XFRA, a distributed compute unit installed outdoors at homes, and is working with NVIDIA and major homebuilder PulteGroup to place mini data centers for AI inference at individual residences. The key question is whether using surplus power from existing residential infrastructure can sidestep the twin barriers facing AI data centers: power-connection delays and local opposition.
