Former Facebook executive and investor Chamath Palihapitiya said in an interview on "The Axios Show" that Facebook (Meta) "completely fumbled" and "profoundly failed" its advantage in AI. He argued that right after ChatGPT launched, Meta could have used its vast user base and contextual data on users to roll out AI products widely and become the dominant force in the open-weight AI ecosystem. Instead, he said, it was Nvidia (under Jensen Huang) that better seized the opportunity by building the infrastructure and ecosystem supporting open-weight models. Palihapitiya declined to speculate on Meta's internal decisions, citing insufficient knowledge of the current dynamics (Axios).
