SpaceX has asked the FCC to authorize an "Orbital Data Center System" of up to one million satellites, intensifying a race to build AI data centers in Earth orbit. Since early 2026, SpaceX, Blue Origin and the startup Starcloud have unveiled successive plans, framing orbital computing as a way to sidestep the power, cooling and land constraints facing terrestrial data centers.
