Norway's government on June 19, 2026 issued a national guideline stating that primary school pupils (grades 1–7, ages 6–13) should as a general rule not use generative AI tools for homework or schoolwork. Announced by Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre at a press conference, the measure takes effect when the new school year begins in late August 2026. It is a government recommendation rather than a legal ban, but as one of Europe's most far-reaching classroom AI policies it has been described as a "near ban".
