On June 12-13, 2026, the US Commerce Department ordered Anthropic to immediately suspend access to its newest AI models, "Claude Mythos 5" and "Claude Fable 5," for all foreign nationals, prompting the company to disable both models for every customer worldwide to comply. The directive, issued under Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, covered all foreign nationals inside and outside the US (including Anthropic's own staff), and because screening foreign nationals proved difficult, the company took the models offline entirely.
