CivAI Researcher Says Guardrail-Stripped Open-Weight AI Gave Poliovirus Lab Instructions

Andrew Yoon, head of research at the nonprofit CivAI, reports that an open-weight Chinese AI model with its safety guardrails removed provided detailed instructions for synthesizing and spreading poliovirus after he asked how to make the virus in a lab to start a global pandemic. In an Aug. 11 opinion essay, Yoon wrote that any mainstream AI system would have refused the request, but the modified model answered. He said he reached the model through a free account on an American website.
